Remembering Diana, Princess of Wales
Posted: 1998-08-31
Many people of my parent's age have seen many great and famous people tragically taken from us, from JFK to Grace Kelly, and more. But the Death of Diana is the first major celebrity tradgedy I've ever witnessed. Many older people can say that they were listening to the radio while driving home, or that they were eating lunch at a cafe the day President John F. Kennedy died. But until Diana died, I luckily couldn't say such a sentence.
But one day I can tell my kids that I was watching Siskel & Ebert on that late Saturday afternoon when the news first broke that Princess Diana, with her friend Dodi Alfayed had been in a car crash in Paris, France. Dodi was dead, and Diana was reportedly in critical condition. It wasn't until later that evening that I learned while watching CNN's coverage that Diana had died.
For me, Diana was someone to look up to and admire. She gave so much in her lifetime, and I hope, even if it's on a much smaller scale, or a bigger one if I am ever successful in my future career, that I can give and help the world like she did. Yes, she had personal problems, but she didn't let that blind her to the ways of the world and to the fact that we all can help each other, even if it's just a little bit.
