Just who does RAF want to represent anyway?
Posted: March 31, 2006
I know, it seems goofy that I'm writing about the Douglas College Students' Union's Spring 2006 General Election on a section of my site devoted to stuff that happens at the Kwantlen University College Student Association (KSA). And, when one looks at any particular student union in British Columbia (or anywhere in the world perhaps), one would expect to find elected officials working tirelessly to represent the needs of their school. One would also expect that those officials, if they're working hard, probably wouldn't have time to take up similar positions at other student unions. But that isn't the case at Kwantlen.
No, a number of your KSA staff and elected officials seem to have so much time on their hands that they feel they can effecitvely run multiple student unions at the same time. That's right - a number of your KSA staff and elected officials are running as candidates at the Douglas Students' Union (DSU), Local 18 of the Canadian Federation of Students. Here's the breakdown...
| NAME | KSA POSITIONS HELD | DSU NOMINATION |
| BUTT, Danish | 2005-06 - Executive Advisor (Staff) 2006-08 - President | 2006 - Member at Large |
| GREWAL, Liv | 2005-06 - Not Elected 2006-08 - Not Currently Elected | 2006 - Treasurer |
| KHATRI, Jaivin | 2005-06 - Executive Director, External Affairs 2006-08 - Vice President, Internal Affairs | 2006 - Internal Relations Coordinator |
| MANN, Raman | 2005-06 - Surrey Campus Representative 2006-08 - Not Currently Elected | 2006 - College Relations Coordinator |
| SARAN, Mandish | 2005-06 - Surrey Front Desk Business Office (Staff) 2006-08 - Surrey Front Desk Executive Assistant (Staff) | 2006 - Women's Liaison |
There may be more people running with RAF, but the names in the above table are the only ones I can positively identify as being with Reduce All Fees at Douglas as of March 31, 2006. More information will be posted shortly as I gather it.
Here's a copy of the Douglas Students' Union Candidates listing, obtained today from the offices of the Douglas Students' Union, as well as video taken on March 31, 2006 of the Main Polling area as well as of campus bulletin boards. Feel free to try and gather information about which candidates are with which parties...
Poll clerks working at the Douglas Students' Union election noted that results of this election should be posted on Tuesday, April 4th. Once obtained, those results will be posted here for your information.
Douglas Students' Union: Annual General Meeting
Posted: April 5, 2006
While we were at Douglas, looking for information on their election, we discovered that Douglas was planning an AGM for March 31st, 2005 at 4pm - 6pm (a fairly odd time, considering most post secondary institutions are dead on Fridays after 2pm). So, for your viewing pleasure, here is the agenda of the DSU meeting:
Unfortunately, I have no real way of judging whether or not it's a good or bad agenda, as the DSU does not have their bylaws online, nor do they have information regarding past Board of Directors meetings or other AGM / SGMs online. DSU had better be careful, and post some stuff soon, or people may start thinking they're the KSA. We wouldn't want that, now would we? Tsk-tsk.
