A Focus on Community...

This section of my website exists to bring you the very latest information on how you can help prevent crime in your neighbourhood.

It's purpose is to help those who want to make a difference in their community - by providing information on a wide-ranging selection of crime prevention programs, goals and iniatives.

What is Community Policing?

The common feature of Community Police Stations worldwide is that they exist to bring the police and the citizens of a community into closer contact.

Most cities in Great Britain, Canada and the United States have Community Police Stations, so check your local listings or call your local police department to see if there's a Community Police Station near you - and find out how you can help today!

Why this site?

This site originated in 1998 out of a frustration of their being no real starting point for Community Policing and Crime Prevention Programs on the Web (Internet). I found that there were a lot of great sites with Police resources, but none that focused soley on Community Policing and Crime Prevention from a citizen's point of view. And on March 28, 1998 this site was born and was regularly maintained by myself, Steven Lee.

At the time of this site's creation, I was a 20 year old University-College student, studying in the field of Film, Marketing and Business Management. From 1993 until 1999 I volunteered with the South Surrey District 5 Community Police Station where I helped with many of the station's services and programs. Specifically, from 1997 to 1999 I put in more than 2,000 hours and was in charge of the following programs:

  • The Bicycle Security and Identification Programs;
  • The Public Education and Community Outreach Programs (I.e. the Marketing of the Station); and the
  • Computer Training Program for Volunteers and Members.
In addition to this, during the summers of 1998 and 1999 I also volunteered with the Vancouver Police Department where I primarily worked front counter at one of the community police offices. Altogether I put in close to 3,500 hours over those seven years and I loved it.

In 1999, I decided to leave Community Policing to concentrate on my studies and my dream of a career in filmmaking. But Community Policing has always been very important to me, and that's why I continued to maintain this site, in the hopes that it would become a starting point for Crime Prevention on the Web. Finally, in 2002, I decided to fold the information I had online regarding Community Policing and Crime Prevention right into my own personal website, in the hope that the information will be more readily available to people as I keep my personal site fairly up to date and have a regular stream of visitors.

So thanks for visiting - I hope you find the information here useful.

Crime Prevention Programs...

At the heart of every Crime Prevention initative is a program that focusses on solving the problems and crime issues that affect us all. Good Crime Prevention Programs are based on ideas and solutions that are proactive in nature, not reactive. The goal of Community Policing is to continually develop relationships that make the police, citizens and other agencies "partners in policing" The following links provide information on common Crime Prevention Programs and Iniatives:

Crime Prevention Links: A comprehensive list of community policing and crime prevention internet sites worldwide.

Volunteering Information and Resources: A comprehensive resource of information, resources and links that deal with volunteering, training, motivation and much more!

Crime Prevention is everyone's responsibility!
