steve lee's what the darkness doesn't know
Silence

I kissed my mother as she stood by the stove
as she glanced outside at the sky and it rained
and she lied, telling me not to believe that stuff about the birds in
their cage, and she kept on telling us all,
not to stop and stare at the kaleidoscope of color all around
And oh, it’s probably true, so I suggest you keep it
with your collection of blue marbles and stuff.
And please - no more arguing, shouting or crying.

Because she was crying too, as the pyramids were slain
six times seventy seven and sixty eight is really nowhere
but from here to eternity - or from here to the Alps
or from here to eternity again.
And I waited for effect and just stood by the door
feeling the wind blow through the screen door
just waiting for eternity to come and
waiting for it to end all the same.
